Cents and Sensibility, a guide to money management and its accompanying website, www.studymoney.us, is a financial education book that is geared to youth transitioning into adulthood. It's target audiences are people with disabilities and their families. The goal for this project was to create a resource so that people with disabilities will have access to information so they can be more involved in their own financial future. The material is presented in an accessible format (e.g. Section 508 compliant, 5th grade reading level). Topics include wants and needs (and their fluid nature), income and expenses, money mapping, understanding credit, safe ways to save (e.g., ABLE accounts, Special Needs Trusts, protecting against identity theft, accessing assistive technology, and adult decision-making options. There are clear explanations about disability-related programs and links to those programs and resources. The book includes a Resource section that includes worksheets for money mapping. There is also a checklist of information ("Road to Independence") that students with disabilities should have gathered prior to graduation. This is a first-of-its kind comprehensive financial education book for people with disabilities.
